Students behind the criterium

The students who run the criterium.

When the Berkeley Hills Road Race and the Berkeley Streets Criterium came together as the Berkeley Omnium in 2024, Preston Mui stepped up to lead the criterium effort from Cal Cycling. The job later passed to Nicolas Goumas and then to Adrian Chin, now Cal Cycling's road sport director.

Each handed it on to the next Cal Cycling rider, which is how a student club keeps a downtown criterium going after its organizers graduate. In 2026, the year collegiate categories officially joined the Omnium, the club's "Meet the Team" article listed Nicolas for the criterium and collegiate racing and Adrian for collegiate racing.

Cal Cycling also turned out on race weekend: the Cal Cycling Team was one of the clubs the Berkeley Bicycle Club thanked for crewing the 2026 Omnium. How the Omnium began

Cal riders race here too.

Cal Cycling riders appear in Berkeley results in 10 seasons since 2012. In 2017 the Berkeley Streets Criterium hosted a Western Collegiate Cycling Conference race on the UC Berkeley campus.

Collegiate fields show up in Berkeley results from 2022, and in 2026 the Omnium added collegiate categories at both races, from Collegiate Novice to Collegiate P/1/2. A student can race the road race on Saturday and the criterium on Sunday, then help put the same race on the following year.

Different generations, same race

Cal Cycling and the Berkeley Bicycle Club are separate organizations. The club has been around since 1979, organizes the Berkeley Omnium and has promoted the Berkeley Hills Road Race since it formed. In 2026 its president anchored the organizing team with, in the club's words, historical knowledge, club direction and community connections.

Cal Cycling brings a new group of UC Berkeley racers every year, and some of them end up running part of the race. People from other clubs and teams sat on the 2026 organizing team too, Super Sprinkles Racing helped coordinate volunteers, and USA Cycling officials, sponsors and volunteers from across Northern California fill in the rest.
