The short answer
The Berkeley Omnium combines results from the Berkeley Hills Road Race and the Berkeley Streets Criterium. Racers must start both events in their Omnium category to qualify for the final standings. Each race awards points by finishing place, 25 for first down to 1 for 20th, counting everyone in the race; the road race and criterium points are added together, and the highest total wins.
Two races. One combined score.
Saturday rewards what you can do on the road. Sunday changes the problem completely. But the scoring is simple: your placing earns points in each race, and those points add together.
To score in the Berkeley Omnium, you start both races in your Omnium category. Your finishing place in each race earns Omnium points, your final score is the two added together, and the highest total wins. Pre-registered racers and day-of registrants are both eligible.
Calculate your score
Enter both places to see your Omnium score.
Enter your actual finishing place, counting racers who aren't in the Omnium. Second Omnium rider across the line but 3rd in the race? Enter 3. To qualify, you must start both races in your Omnium category.
Calculator results are informational. Official race results and Omnium standings determine final placing.

How points are awarded
Each race awards the same points by finishing place, 25 points for a win down to 1 point for 20th. Points are awarded through 20th place; places below that score no points.

Winning one race doesn't win the Omnium
| Racer | BHRR | Berkeley Streets | Omnium total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Racer A | 1st → 25 | 10th → 11 | 36 |
| Racer B | 4th → 18 | 3rd → 20 | 38 |
Racer B leads the Omnium, 38 to 36, without winning either race. Consistency across both kinds of racing matters.
Your race place determines your points
Five racers finish a race. Three of them are in the Omnium:
| Place | Racer | In the Omnium? | Omnium points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Racer A | Yes | 25 (1st-place points) |
| 2nd | Racer B | No | Not in the Omnium |
| 3rd | Racer C | Yes | 20 (3rd-place points) |
| 4th | Racer D | No | Not in the Omnium |
| 5th | Racer E | Yes | 16 (5th-place points) |
Racer C was the second Omnium racer across the line but finished 3rd in the race, so Racer C gets 3rd-place points: 20, not 22. The second-place finisher still counts, even though they aren't racing the Omnium.
You can race more than one crit, but only one counts
You may enter more than one Berkeley Streets Criterium field you're eligible for. But you receive Omnium points only from the criterium category you registered for the Omnium.
For example: you're registered for a masters Omnium category and you're also eligible for another criterium later in the day. Your masters criterium result counts toward your Omnium. The extra race is another chance to race, but its result doesn't replace or add to your Omnium points.
An eligible second criterium costs $20.
Do primes count toward the Omnium?
No. Primes don't earn Omnium points under the current rules. The criterium may still have primes for other prizes, but they don't change your Omnium score.

Women's Omnium: which BHRR course counts?
At the Berkeley Hills Road Race, women choose a long or short course. For the Omnium, the course that earns points is set by your Omnium category:
| Omnium category | BHRR course |
|---|---|
| Women's P/1/2/3 | Long course |
| Women's 3 | Short course |
| Women's 4/Novice | Short course |
| Masters women | Short course |
The race format lets racers of every category choose either course, and the BAR/BAT season-points guidance is slightly different: it puts P/1/2 racers on the long course and Category 3 racers on the short course. For Omnium points, though, what matters is the course shown above for the Omnium category you registered in. If you're unsure, check your Omnium category before you register.
What happens if two racers have the same points?
- Best finishCompare each racer's best placing from the two races. The better best placing wins.
- Still tied?
- Worst finishIf the best placings match, compare each racer's worst placing. The better worst placing wins.
- Still tied?
- Criterium finishIf they're still tied, whoever placed better in the Berkeley Streets Criterium wins.
Tiebreak 1: best finish
Racer A: 2nd and 7th (36 points). Racer B: 3rd and 5th (36 points). They're tied, so compare best finishes: Racer A's 2nd beats Racer B's 3rd, and Racer A wins the tiebreak.
Tiebreak 2: worst finish
This one comes into play when a racer finishes outside the top 20, where places score no points. Racer A: 2nd and 23rd (22 points). Racer B: 2nd and 28th (22 points). Their best finishes match, so compare worst finishes: Racer A's 23rd beats Racer B's 28th, and Racer A wins.
Tiebreak 3: criterium finish
Racer A: 2nd at BHRR and 8th at Berkeley Streets (35 points). Racer B: 8th at BHRR and 2nd at Berkeley Streets (35 points). Same best finish, same worst finish, so the criterium decides it: Racer B placed better at Berkeley Streets and wins the tie.
A simple Omnium example
| Racer | BHRR | BHRR points | Crit | Crit points | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maya | 1st | 25 | 7th | 14 | 39 |
| Sofia | 3rd | 20 | 2nd | 22 | 42 |
| Emma | 5th | 16 | 1st | 25 | 41 |
Sofia wins the Omnium with 42 points, even though she didn't win either race. These racers are examples, not real results.
Consistency matters
With only two scoring races, every placing matters. A great road race result puts you in a strong position, but the Omnium isn't finished on Saturday. And a racer who doesn't win either race can still win the overall: two 2nd-place finishes score 44 points, more than a win and an 8th (38).
Know where you stand after the road race, but race the criterium, not the spreadsheet. Ride safely and race the race in front of you.
Saturday night: know where you stand
Berkeley Omnium results have been published on OnTheDay. Look up your road race result there, find your place in the points table above, and you'll know what you're carrying into Sunday. The official results and standings are the ones that count; this guide doesn't publish its own.

Then explore your Sunday scenarios: every criterium finish and what it would do to your total.
Pre-registered or day-of: both count
Pre-registered racers and day-of registrants are both eligible for Omnium scoring. Day-of registration is available at both races (+$15), and the registration guide covers deadlines, payment, licenses and junior waivers.
Questions
How Berkeley Omnium scoring works: FAQ
What is the Berkeley Omnium?
A combined result from two races on one weekend: the Berkeley Hills Road Race and the Berkeley Streets Criterium. Points from both are added together, and the highest total wins.
How do you qualify for the Berkeley Omnium standings?
Start both races, the Berkeley Hills Road Race and the Berkeley Streets Criterium, in your Omnium category.
How are Berkeley Omnium points calculated?
Your road race points plus your criterium points. Each race awards 25 points for 1st down to 1 point for 20th.
Does first place get 25 points?
Yes. Under the current scoring table, 1st place earns 25 points in each race.
Do non-Omnium racers affect Omnium points?
Yes. Points follow your actual finishing place, including racers who aren't in the Omnium. If you finish 3rd behind a non-Omnium racer, you get 3rd-place points.
Can I race more than one Berkeley Streets criterium?
Yes, if you're eligible for the other field, but only the criterium in the category you registered for the Omnium earns Omnium points.
Do criterium primes earn Omnium points?
No. There may be primes for other prizes, but they don't change your Omnium score.
Can day-of registrants compete for the Omnium?
Yes. Pre-registered racers and day-of registrants are both eligible.
How are Berkeley Omnium ties broken?
Best placing first, then worst placing, then the better criterium placing.
Which BHRR course counts for the Women's Omnium?
Women's P/1/2/3: long course. Women's 3: short course. Women's 4/Novice: short course. Masters women: short course.
