Elite Teams & Racing at Berkeley

Elite racing, on the same start line.

The Berkeley Hills Road Race has always mixed levels of the sport. Juniors, masters and local club riders share the climbs, and so do professional teams, Domestic Elite teams, strong regional teams and the development programs feeding them. This is a growing, verified record of those teams and the riders who raced for them.

On April 29, 2023, Tyler Williams of L39ION of Los Angeles won the men's Pro/1/2/3 race at the Berkeley Hills Road Race. L39ION teammate Samuel Boardman finished 4th.

Williams, born in Bakersfield, California, raced professionally for Axeon–Hagens Berman and Israel Cycling Academy before L39ION, the team brothers Justin and Cory Williams founded in 2019 with the goal of increasing diversity and inclusion in cycling. By 2023, L39ION was a professional team.

The rest of the field was the Berkeley Hills field as it always is: Bay Area club riders and local teams like Alto Velo. The same climbs and the same start line, for a pro team's winner and a club racer finishing mid-pack.

In 2026, Nathaniel Martin won the men's Pro/1/2 race at the Berkeley Hills Road Race for SpeedBlock-Terún, on USA Cycling's Domestic Elite roster that year. Sarah Flamm was 3rd in the women's Pro/1/2/3.

It wasn't Terún's first time on top at Berkeley. The 2024 Berkeley Hills Road Race was the NCNCA Elite Road Race District Championship, and Flamm, then racing for Terun, won the women's Pro/1/2/3 and the NCNCA Elite Women's title. Terún riders also finished 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th, and Hannah Stackpole took the NCNCA U23 Women's title. In 2025, racing as SpeedBlock p/b Terún, Jamie Chapman was 3rd.

Terún calls itself a Palo Alto team born in a pizzeria, with elite men's and women's squads, a development squad, an open club and a kids program. You can see it in the results: Terún riders line up from Cat 4 to Pro/1/2, and Aubery Longeau Kurtz went from 4th in Cat 3 in 2025 to the Pro/1/2 field in 2026. Local racing is where that climb happens.

In 2026, with CycleSport.com on USA Cycling's Domestic Elite roster, Mattheus Johnson finished 3rd in the men's Pro/1/2 at the Berkeley Hills Road Race and Ivan Linser 6th.

The team was racing Berkeley long before that status. In 2017, as Cycle Sport – Specialized p/b Muscle Milk, it put three riders in the men's P/1/2 top ten: Tim McBirney 5th, Jason Gandzjuk 7th and Brian Funk 10th. In 2023, CycleSport.com's Todd Bell was 3rd in Masters 50+ 1/2/3 and Steve Reaney 13th in the Pro/1/2/3, and another rider entered as Cycle Sport – Specialized p/b Muscle Milk in the same field. CycleSport masters racers have been back every year since.

And they race it, not just ride it. Six CycleSport riders started the 2025 Pro/1/2/3. Chris Riekert made the day's main breakaway, and a rider in that break later wrote that CycleSport and Mike's Bikes kept “launching pairs of riders across” on the flatter sections. Domestic Elite racing at Berkeley isn't new: strong California teams have been lining up here for years, beside local clubs, masters and developing riders.

Team Mike's Bikes was formed in the fall of 2010 with the goal, in its own words, “to elevate the Northern California racing scene.” Its mission is to develop, inspire and nurture the next generation of racers.

In 2024, with the team on USA Cycling's Domestic Elite roster, ten Team Mike's Bikes riders started the Berkeley Hills men's Pro/1/2/3. Mattheus Johnson, 20 at the time, finished 6th. The same day, Matthew Schumann won the Men's Novice race.

The pathway shows in the results. Nick Brown raced Cat 4 for the team in 2022 and 2023, was 4th in Cat 3 in 2024, and lined up in the Pro/1/2/3 in 2025. Schumann followed his Novice win with 3rd in Cat 4. Johnson went on to 3rd in the 2026 men's Pro/1/2 for CycleSport.com. Berkeley isn't only where established riders race. It's where developing ones move up.

Team Mike's Bikes isn't on USA Cycling's 2026 Domestic Elite roster, and it still races Berkeley, with riders in the 2026 men's Pro/1/2 at both the Berkeley Hills and Berkeley Streets.

Monarch Racing's women were on the Berkeley Hills podium two years running. In 2023, Helena Gilbert-Snyder, Monarch's team manager, finished 2nd in the women's Pro/1/2/3, with three more Monarch riders in the top 11. In 2024, with Monarch on USA Cycling's women's Domestic Elite roster, Chloe Mauvais was 2nd and then 4th at Berkeley Streets the next day.

The next generation came behind them. In 2025 a Monarch Development rider won Junior Girls 13-14 at the Berkeley Hills, and in 2026 Monarch juniors swept the top three places in both Junior Girls 15-16 and Junior Girls 17-18. Monarch describes itself as home to a domestic elite women's road team and the largest junior girls' road team in the country, and at Berkeley you can see both on the same weekend.

How we classify teams.

  • Professional teams. Teams racing at the professional level in the year they raced Berkeley.
  • USA Cycling Domestic Elite teams. Teams on USA Cycling's Domestic Elite roster, the top tier of American amateur racing, in the year they raced Berkeley.
  • Elite and regional teams. Strong elite and regional teams without professional or Domestic Elite status in the year they raced Berkeley.
  • Development programs. Programs built to move riders up, from first races to elite fields.
  • A team's status is its status in the year it raced Berkeley. A rider who later turned pro doesn't make their team a pro team, and a strong team isn't called Domestic Elite unless USA Cycling lists it.
  • Every result comes from the official results, and every status and career fact is linked to its source.
