The story
Our club. Our race. Our racers.
The Berkeley Bicycle Club formed in January 1979, when Velo Club Berkeley merged with the Berkeley Wheelmen, and has organized the Berkeley Hills Road Race ever since. But BBC isn't a race company. It's a club of bike racers, and every year its members pin on numbers and line up at their own race, beside riders from across California, the Pacific Northwest, the rest of the country and, in 2025, Malaysia.
At the 70th Berkeley Hills Road Race in 2026, nine BBC riders finished, in categories from Novice to Masters 65+. A BBC junior won the Junior Boys 15-16 race, and two more finished 2nd and 4th in Junior Boys 17-18.
There's something particular about helping put on a race, then racing it yourself. You know what went into the course, the permits and the volunteer shifts. And then you're just another rider on the start line, hoping the legs are good on the Three Bears.

Race weekend, from the inside
We organize. We volunteer. We race.
Before the race, BBC members plan it: the course, the categories, the officials, the volunteers, the hundred small jobs that turn a road into a race.
On race day, BBC jerseys line up in the same fields as everyone else, from the Novice race to Masters 65+.
After the race, it's cones, cleanup and cheering in the last riders, then starting on next year.

Every generation on the start line
Juniors to Masters 65+.
The results tell the story better than we could. In 2026 a BBC junior won Junior Boys 15-16 at the Berkeley Hills, and another went from 12th in Junior Boys 15-16 in 2025 to 2nd in Junior Boys 17-18 a year later.
Newer racers line up too: Edmond Chaussidon finished 11th in the 2026 Novice race, and Salwan Butrus 10th in the 2024 Novice race. In the masters fields, Paul Randall was 8th in Masters 60+ in 2026, Michael Hudley and Owen Miyoshi were both 4th in their Masters 3/4 races in 2025, and Nicholas Fynn has finished in the Masters 50+ 3/4 top 10 three years running.
Ryan Greene-Roesel took 2nd in Women 40+ in 2025. And Nathaniel English lined up in the 2025 men's Pro/1/2/3 field for the club.

Berkeley Bike Club Juniors, led by Todd Edminster, teaches young riders group riding, racecraft and race fundamentals. And BBC juniors are now winning at the club's own race.
The same club is where adults find their first race, where masters racers keep racing for decades, and where racers become the volunteers, officials and organizers who keep the race going.
