The story
From Land Park to the Berkeley hills.
Sacramento Golden Wheelmen has been a Sacramento bike racing club since 1973. Its stated purpose is simple: to conduct and take part in bike racing. It does both. Every March it puts on the Bariani Road Race in Zamora and the Land Park Criterium in Sacramento, two early-season Northern California races, and then its riders go racing around the region, Berkeley included.
SGW riders have raced the Berkeley Hills Road Race every year from 2024 to 2026. Jay Sturges won Masters 50+ 3/4 in 2024. In 2025, Amy Goad won the Women Cat 4/Novice long race, one of four SGW women in the Cat 4/Novice fields that day.
Sacramento is a drive down I-80 from the start line. Clubs that make that drive, and then go home and put on races of their own, are a big part of why Northern California still has a road racing calendar.
The primary function of the Sacramento Golden Wheelmen is to conduct and participate in bicycle racing events and further the Olympic sport of bicycle racing.

Who they bring
New racers, women racers, masters.
SGW's Berkeley results read like a healthy club. Jay Sturges won Masters 50+ 3/4 in 2024, and Lorenzo Feher was 6th in Masters 35+ 3/4 in 2025.
The women's fields stand out. In 2025, Amy Goad won Women Cat 4/Novice (Long), Anna Stromberg of the SGW Women's Racing Team was 4th in the short race, and Sarah Jimenez and Tessa Putz raced it too. Amy and Tessa came back in 2026, and Amy raced both days of the Omnium.
Cat 4 and Novice fields are where racing either grows or doesn't. A club that fills them, then comes back the next year, is doing the most important work in the sport.

SGW's March races: Bariani and Land Park.
The Bariani Road Race starts from Bariani Olive Oil in Zamora, out in the farm country northwest of Sacramento, and is an early-season road race held each March. If the Berkeley Hills is your goal race, Bariani is a good place to find out where your legs are.
The Land Park Criterium runs the same weekend on the streets of Land Park in Sacramento, and was part of the 2024 NCNCA Premier Series. If you love criterium racing at Berkeley Streets, keep going and race Land Park too.
It already works both ways: Berkeley Bicycle Club riders raced the 2026 Bariani Road Race, and Paul Randall finished 3rd in Masters 60+.

One Northern California racing community

Local bike racing survives when racers support the whole calendar, not just their home race. The Berkeley Bicycle Club puts on the Berkeley Omnium. Rio Strada Racing puts on the Golden State Race Series. Sacramento Golden Wheelmen puts on the Bariani Road Race and the Land Park Criterium.
